Assigning phrase breaks from part-of-speech sequences
This paper presents an algorithm for automatically assigning phrase breaks to unrestricted text for use in a text-to-speech synthesizer. Text is first converted into a sequence of part-of-speech tags. Next a Markov model is used to give the most likely sequence of phrase breaks for the input part-of-speech tags. In the Markov model, states represent types of phrase break and the transitions bet...
متن کاملUsing part-of-speech for predicting phrase breaks
Predicting the location of phrase breaks within an utterance is an important task in text-to-speech synthesis, and can be done with reasonable accuracy using part-of-speech (POS) tags as features. However, it seems unlikely that the 40 or more different tags used by most taggers all contribute to this task, and in fact many may contribute noise. In this paper, we present an algorithm for reduci...
متن کاملIntegrating Linguistic and Performance-Based Constraints for Assigning Phrase Breaks
The mapping between syntactic structure and prosodic structure is a widely discussed topic in linguistics. In this work we use insights gained from research on syntax-to-prosody mapping in order to develop a computational model which assigns prosodic structure to unrestricted text. The resulting structure is intended to help a text-to-speech (TTS) system to predict phrase breaks. In addition to...
متن کاملAssigning Phrase Breaks Using CARTs for Basque TTS
This paper presents a prosodic phrasing method for the Basque language, to improve naturalness in text to speech synthesis. Binary classification trees are trained with morphological and syntactic information to predict locations of breaks. Overall score achieved by the prediction tree is 92.53%, which compares positively with the results published for other languages.
متن کاملLearning speaker-specific phrase breaks for text-to-speech systems
The objective of this paper is to investigate whether prosodic phrase breaks are specific to a speaker, and if so, propose a mechanism of learning speaker-specific phrase breaks from the speech database. Another equally important aspect dealt in this work is to demonstrate the usefulness of these speaker-specific phrase breaks for a text-to-speech system. Experiments are carried out on two diff...
